Heritage Commission Minutes
April 24. 2001

Present: Leslie Wharton, Michael dell’Orto, Stanley Young. Tom Greenman. Larry Smith. Corinne Blagbrough.

Leslie Wharton said that Jerry Green was planning to go over Heritage Commission by-laws for neighboring communities. Stan Young recommended that we send delegates to other Heritage Commissions to compare notes.

We discussed carrying out an inventory of local buildings, starting with downtown. Larry Smith suggested that architecture was more significant in the initial part of the survey than historical context. Leslie Wharton suggested that we contact the owners of every structure and interview each one.

Larry Smith thought that it might be helpful if we used the state forms and talked to the people from the New Hampshire Historical Commission for advice on how to conduct a small-town historical inventory. Larry Smith said that he would contact Linda Wilson in the state office about the most efficient use of our time and resources.

Michael dell’Orto suggested that we might ask high school students, property owners and volunteers to conduct the inventory.

Leslie Wharton thought it might be useful to contact other Heritage Commissions which have conducted their own inventory.

Maps were looked over.

Leslie Wharton presented a business item. The Wilton Heritage Commission has been contacted by the Citizens for a Monadnock Region Heritage Alliance, which hoped that we might help them raise funds. After a brief discussion it was decided to table this item at this meeting.
