The meeting was called to order on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008 at 7:30 pm in the Wilton Public and Gregg Free Library. Present were Stanley Young, David Potter, Michael Dell’Orto, Dan Donovan, and Nancy Clark.
The minutes were read and approved. The Treasurer reported that Dan Donovan has been paid $500 for kiosk materials. A deposit was also paid to Bob Leonard for his work on the Town Hall Theatre sign.
Stanley said he would like to have a large sign bearing the Heritage Commissions logo placed on top of the downtown kiosk.
Next, Stanley showed Commission members a large map of Wilton (circa 1960?) with various significant locations around town noted, with accompanying legends. He suggested this map could be used as a model for the Heritage Commission’s eventual map of historical sites and Heritage Commission signs.
Stanley presented Richard Medlyn’s estimate of $3400 for repairs of damaged gravestones. That estimate has been forwarded to the cemetery trustees.
Another time was set for the trek to the Old County Farm Cemetery -- Dec. 6, weather permitting. (The expedition subsequently took place and the cemetery was located, marked by a section of stonewall and a partially collapsed fence, with a large stone monument, erected in 1934,which reads .......)
Stanley received an email from Spencer Brooks. The state says that the Peters’ Dam on Marden Road is a hazard that ought to be removed. Stanley has looked into the history of the dam. It seems to be built of fairly new concrete. Jane Bergeron thinks the concrete was poured in the early 1940s, most likely on the site of an older dam. It looks to be in good shape but it has no spillway. Previous owners have regulated water height by removing boards but at the present time no one is living in the house and no one was watching the water level during the recent heavy rains and floods. Any new owner will have to decide whether to modify the dam (build a spillway) or to remove it.
Michael asked for input on the text of the Town Hall Theatre sign, prior to sending it to Bob Leonard.
The meeting adjourned at 8 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Clark, Secretary
