WILTON HERITAGE COMMISSION
MINUTES FOR TUESDAY, SEPT. 23, 2008

The meeting was called to order on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 pm in the Wilton Public and Gregg Free Library. Present were Stanley Young, Michael Dell’Orto, Don Channing, David Potter, Corinne Blagbrough, and Nancy Clark.

The minutes of the August meeting were read and accepted. The Treasurer reported that no money had been spent.

It was agreed that a date would be set at the next Heritage Commission meeting for a trek though the woods to the site of the County Farm Cemetery. Landowners have given their permission for commission members to cross their properties (taking the long way) to the site.

On Sept. 17, several commission members met with architectural historian Lisa Mausolf and conducted a tour of inspection of the Town Hall. Ms. Mausolf was very encouraging about the building’s prospects for inclusion on the National Register. She plans to complete her work in time for the state meeting in June when the Town Hall’s eligibility will be considered. If the requirements have been successfully met at that level, the matter will be referred to the national committee in Washington. With any luck, National Register status may be achieved this summer.

The question rose as to the whereabouts of the National Register plaque for the library which was to have been purchased by the Friends of the Library. Was a check ever written for the plaque?

Construction has begun in Dan Donovan’s workshop on the kiosk for the Whiting Mill site. It will have three glass-fronted display areas covered by a small shingle roof. The site of the kiosk has yet to be determined, but several weekends of work remain to be done before installation. The French Village sign has been been put up on Intervale Road.

Corinne has spoken with Gary Crooker about the folksingers. The Old Home committee will get in touch with them.

Stanley and David met at Vale end with Richard Medlyn of Medlyn Monuments at Vale End. They gave him all of the information (photos, locations, descriptions) on the damaged stones and Mr. Medlyn will come up with an estimate for repairs. He has done similar work for surrounding towns. The Heritage Commission will work with the Cemetery Trustees on this project. Stanley thinks every stone should be photographed and stored in a data base before some of the information, which is of historical and genealogical interest, is lost forever. Michael reported he has looked into the old Catholic cemetery’s plot plans which are kept at the church. The numbered grids are not current but presumably can be updated.

New business was taken up. Michael has spoken to Dennis about a sign for the Town Hall Theatre. Michael thinks that a mid-sized sign describing the theater’s long history would be in order. (Silent movies were shown there in 1912, and the theater was on the vaudeville circuit prior to that.) It was observed that with so many historic signs already in place around town, the time was coming to think about creating a Heritage Map for visitors.

The meeting adjourned at 8:20

Respectfully submitted,

Nancy Clark, Secretary
