The minutes were read, amended, and accepted. The Treasurer reported that no money had been spent.
Stanley reported he has arranged with a representative from Medlyn Monuments to assess the damaged headstones in the town’s several cemeteries and come up with an idea of the cost to begin repairs. The inventory of the damaged headstones -- the photos, descriptions, and locations -- have been transferred to CDs. The Cemetery Comittee plans to visit the remote and almost forgotten location of the old County Farm Cemetery. Located within privately held land, the cemetery (Lot A7) itself remains county propery but permission will be asked of the private landowners before a work party is assembled to cut brush and clean up the area. Photos will be taken as well, and Michael voluteered to search county records for the names of those buried at the site.
On the matter of seeking National Register status for Town Hall, Corinne has spoken with architectual historian Lisa Mausolf who will be able to start work on research and complete it in time for the next hearing to assess candidates’ eligibility for Nat. Register status. The Heritage Commission will raise funds to pay her. Dan will put the request to spend “gift money” for this purpose before the Selectman for their approval.
It is hoped that before the month is over, work will begin on building the first of the downtown historical display kiosks, this one to be located in the area by the police station. When the kiosk is standing, enlarged copies of photos of Whiting Mills, along with explanatory text on the history of the mills, will be displayed there. Other aspects of the history of that end of town will also be noted.
There was no new business and the meeting adjourned at 8:20.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Clark
