The meeting was called to order on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at 7:30 pm in the Wilton Public and Gregg Free Library. Present were Stanley Young, David Potter, Corinne Blagbrough, Don Channing, Phyllis Tallarico, Dan Donovan, and Nancy Clark.
The minutes for the April 22nd meeting were read, amended, and approved. There was no treasuer’s report, but it was noted that nothing had been spent.
The cemetery committee met on May 14 to inventory and photograph damage to 29 stones in Laurel Hill Cemetery. The Heritage Commission will now seek estimates for repairs to these stones, and those in Vale End and South Yard, as well. Still on the subject of cemeteries, Dan Donovan was asked about access to the old County Farm Cemetery which may or may not lie on private land. Dan said that the Selectmen can be petitioned to authorize access to the cemetery. The Heritage Commission would like to maintain and to recognize the single large stone deep in the woods that marks the final resting place of many nameless souls.
The historic marker for French Village has arrived and is awaiting installation in an area yet to be decided.
Corinne reported on the effort to place the Town Hall on the National Register of Historic Places. Lisa Mausolf, an architectural historian from Reading, Mass., is familiar with the building and is convinced that the Town Hall is eligible for the National Register. She will charge $1,000 to do further research which will be added to the work already done. Funds will be available to pay Ms. Mausolf. This money will be treated as a “gift” and its use will have to be approved at a public meeting before the selectmen.
There was no new business, and the meeting adjourned at 8:15.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Clark
