The meeting was called to order on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007 at 7:30 pm in the Wilton Public Library. Present were Stanley Young, Michael Dell’Orto, Don Channing, Gail Hoar, Richard Rockwood and Nancy Clark.
The November minutes were read and accepted. The Treasurer reported that there was no change in the account.
The ongoing subject of signs was raised. The Davisville and County Farm signs will be erected when the ground has thawed.
The matter of Four Corner Farms was revisited. Steve Moheban has not applied for a building permit as he agreed to do nor has he applied to the Heritage Commission retroactively for permission to install the exterior staircase. Commission members plan to check with LCHIP to find out whether Mr. Moheban has applied to them for assistance in phrasing this request.
The Heritage Commission will ask for $700 from the town budget this year.
The text of the year end 2006 Heritage Commission Report was read over and approved and will be submitted for inclusion in the Town Report.
New Business was discussed, next, as commission members proposed projects for the upcoming year. Suggested were signs for Andy’s Playhouse, the Baptist and Unitarian Churches, Carnival Hill and the Frog Pond. Also, it was noted that the time has come to think about which downtown sites and buildings will need signs, and a list will be prepared to be considered as the Main Street improvements project gets underway.
Dick Rockwood wondered whether the Heritage Commission, in a joint effort with the Historical Society, would be interested in sponsoring a talk and/or workshop on how to put a private dwelling on the National Register. Assistance will be available from the state in setting this up. As well, the Town Hall would be a good candidate for the National Register and it was agreed that this would become a priority. Commission members will look into the possibility of finding a college student to take on the project.
Also, more volunteers are needed to help Michael with the documentation project. First, though, Michael wants to set up a written protocol for volunteers to follow so that they can work independently.
The meeting adjourned at 8:20 pm.
Respectfully submitted, Nancy Clark
