WILTON HERITGE COMMISSION MINUTES FOR MAY 23, 2006

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, May 23, 2006 in the Wilton Public Library. Present were Stanley Young, Phyllis Tallarico, Corinne Blagbrough, Richard Rockwood and Nancy Clark.

The minutes were read and approved. There was no treasurer’s report.

Commission members agreed to send a letter to the NH Division of Historical Resources, supporting Andy’s Playhouse’s application for a “Moose Plate” grant for the repair of the bell tower of their building in Wilton Center. Members then considered the draft of a letter written to the Wilton Zoning Board of Adjustments, stating opposition to the granting of a zoning variance to allow the operation of a gravel pit on the Kennedy property on Isaac Frye Highway. After some discussion, the draft was approved. As well, Stanley reported he had sent a letter to the Road Agent and Selectmen in regard to the work being done on Marden Road. He wants to make sure that the granite Peterboro directional sign post will be safeguarded and preserved.

Stanley suggested that the Heritage Commission photograph all of the sites and items we have included on the historical/cultural list. Viewsheds will be included in this, as well. He further pointed out that CD storage (as is being used in the ongoing document preservation project) is only good for five years. Gold CD’s exist which will preserve archival material for 300 years, however technology that far into the future will no doubt be unimaginably different and it is to be hoped that the material on the existing CD’s will be transferred to whatever mode of storage will be in current use, in the years to come.

Glen Swanson, chairperson of the Peterborough Heritage Commission, has suggested the holding of a joint meeting of the Peterborough and Wilton Heritage Commissions. Peterborough meets on the second Thursday of the month, at 4 pm. Commission members expressed interest in the proposal.

Members then moved on to continue work on the Historical/Cultural overlay of the Natural Resources map. The meeting adjourned some time after 9 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Nancy Clark, Secretary
