HERITAGE COMMISSION

MINUTES FOR MARCH 23, 2006

The meeting was called to order on Tuesday, March 23, 2006 at 7:30 pm in the Wilton Public library. Present were Stanley Young, Michael Dell’Orto, Phyllis Tallarico, Corinne Blagbrough, Don Channing and Nancy Clark. Also attending were Spencer Brookes and Lynne Draper of the Wilton Conservation Commission.

The minutes were read and accepted. The treasurer reported the amount of $760.47 in the private account. Two house plaques have been ordered.

Spencer and Lynne brought the Commission up to speed on the natural resources mapping project. A draft map was unfurled and studied, The final map will include a cultural and historic layer and the Heritage Commission has already produced a working list of significant. sites to be included. Discussed was the possibility of giving the town’s well-inventoried old houses a map layer of their own. Spencer and Lynne also noted that the Souhegan River is going to be included in a study by the State Legislature, having been selected as a representative river which flows through a variety of environments, both rural and urban.

Lynne noted that the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance was sponsoring a conference covering a number of topics designed to promote the preservation of community character. Commission members expressed interest in attending.

Then, the texts for the Davisville and West Wilton signs were discussed and amended, and potential sites for the signs were proposed.

The New Hampshire State Library is accepting applications for conservation grants for 2006. The commission plans to seek funds for the purchase of a larger scanner which will facilitate the ongoing project of scanning significant historical documents. The meeting adjourned at 8:30 pm.
