HERITAGE COMMISSION

MINUTES FOR JAN. 24, 2006

The meeting was called to order on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 pm at the Wilton Public Library.  Present were Stanley Young, Michael Dell'Orto, Phyllis Tallarico and Nancy Clark.  The December minutes were read and approved.  The Treasurer reported that there is $620.47 in the private account and of the town's appropriation, $98 remain.

Progress is being made on the Davisville and West Wilton signs.  The texts will be reviewed and revised via email.

Michael spoke to Lynn Draper of the Natural Resources Commission and she is very enthusiastic about the Carnival Hill Project.  The next step is to look into the possible relocation of the old school house, perhaps involving the Timber Framers' Guild who may be persuaded to take on the dismantling and reconstruction of the schoolhouse.

The Town Pound plaque has been delivered and will be installed when warmer weather permits the digging of post holes  The reconstructed Davisville directional signs have been reinstalled and the original signs will be preserved in the Historic Rooms.

A box of documents has been received from Francis Gros Louis, and the contents await cataloguing and scanning and archival preservation.  Items include at 1814 list of voters in town, and from 1774-75, the names of those who bought pews in the Meeting House and seats in the gallery where there were separate sections for Men and Women.  Also to be found among the donated documents are many Burton family deeds and wills which were found in Jenny Abbot's attic when Francis Gros Louis purchased the house from her.

Commission members also discussed the widening of Marden Road which has seen increased traffic due to a new development.  Also, interest was expressed in stone wall preservation and existing state law will be looked into to see how far it goes in keeping non-boundary walls intact.  Finally, the Commission decided to see whether a Wilton Town History component can be added to the New Hampshire fourth grade state history curriculum.  The meeting adjourned at 8:45.

Respectfully Submitted,

Nancy Clark, Secretary
