Heritage Commission Meeting for 23 October 2001

Attending this meeting were Corinne Blagbrough, Gail Hoar, Leslie Wharton, Stan Young and Bob Choninard.

This meeting got started about 7:15, when Guy Holt, our long awaited speaker entered the library and began expounding about the old days in Wilton, specifically, the Town Hall.  Guy had been asked to speak at a previous meeting but had canceled at the last minute for personal reasons.  He was here now and told us many interesting happenings that took place at the Town Hall.  Prior to 1931, all school graduations were held there.  Movies, dances, boxing matches, basketball games, as well as two Minstrel Shows per year, occurred.  Guy also seemed to think that Main Street as well as The Cut [Park Street], were dirt and paved for the first time about 1920.  Guy also mentioned the swing bridge, approximately behind Nelson’s Candies, over the river to the mill-yard.  Guy’s memory, as well as his storytelling, is just wonderful.  Guy Holt is 89.

The business part of the meeting started with a discussion about whether or not Hal Meicher would be asked to speak at a future meeting about a bill in the N.H. House concerning possible help to farmers and their barns.  Both Leslie and Stan said they had spoken to Hal and no real information was forthcoming. Maybe there will be more information about this next year.

The V... has been sealed with two coats of a Teflon material.  Leslie procured the materials and Bob applied the sealer.

Corinne mentioned the state’s Historical Markers that dot the roadside of New Hampshire. The State only does 10 new ones per year for the whole state and only one per town. We’ll be thinking about possible markers in Wilton.

Leslie will read GUIDE FOR DECISION MAKING ref Conservation Easement for N. H. Farms Manual.

Meeting adjourned at 9:37
        Robert A. Chouinard, Secretary
