PRESENT: All trustees and Charlie McGettigan
The minutes of Dec. 10, 2007 were accepted as presented.
We spent time discussing a bill coming up in the NH legislature concerning 'green burials'. We don't object to the idea but we do wonder if the implementation was thought through. For Wilton cemeteries, a specific or a new area would be required. Would the town have to acquire more space? We don't have a designated green section at this time. A green burial would not require a casket to be placed in a cement vault in a grave. Vaults were required years ago to prevent the cave-ins caused as the container disintegrated, making the ground uneven.
We think more research should be done by the proponents of this legislation. Questions we had- What would the condition of the cemetery be after a period of time? Is the hazardous footing a liability to the town?
Jim will prepare a statement on behalf of the trustees and see that Eric Rochette of the Anctil and Rochette Funeral Home in Nashua has it when Eric goes to the hearing on January 16th in Concord.
Charlie expressed concern with all of the cemetery maps being located in one place, (at the town hall). We will check with Dawn Tuomala of Monadnock Survey to see if she has the Mylars of the cemeteries. We do agree that the maps should be in more than one place in the event of a disaster. The maps should be available soon, showing where and what is available.
Charlie also brought up the need for sealing the roads in the cemeteries. We have focused on the grounds and we do need to expand our thoughts to seeing that the roads are maintained before the costs of doing so would be prohibitive within our budget.
Maurine presented a draft of duties and responsibilities for the cemetery trustees. A few minor changes will be incorporated into this document and when it is completed and approved by the trustees, it will be available on the Cemetery Trustees webpage on the Town of Wilton website.
